Human-Centered Design for Social Innovation

  • 0:04 - 0:08
Hi! My name is Sean, and I work for IDEO.org.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
I'm here today to tell you about an exciting
  • 0:10 - 0:12
human-centred design workshop that we created
  • 0:12 - 0:16
with Acumen. Human Centred Design starts with people,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
and we place people at the centre of each stage
  • 0:18 - 0:23
of the design process. HCD is about getting out there, prototyping rapidly
  • 0:23 - 0:30
and iterating until we get our ideas right. This workshop, just like the HCD process,
  • 0:30 - 0:34
begins with discovery. As part of this course, you'll learn
  • 0:34 - 0:38
interviewing skills and other design methods to give you the
  • 0:38 - 0:41
confidence to get out there and start the HCD process
  • 0:41 - 0:44
yourself. Let's hear from one of our designers:
  • 0:44 - 0:48
I was on an ideo.org project last year in Mexico, and
  • 0:48 - 0:52
we were focused on helping low-income people save
  • 0:52 - 0:55
more easily. One of the things we went into the
  • 0:55 - 0:58
field thinking was that people never had bank accounts
  • 0:58 - 1:00
but we found that many had had bank accounts but
  • 1:00 - 1:03
gave them up due to bad experiences and instead
  • 1:03 - 1:06
had developed all sorts of innovative ways to save
  • 1:06 - 1:09
in their communities, families, between friends. So what we
  • 1:09 - 1:13
ended up doing was shifting the focus of the project
  • 1:13 - 1:16
to help them save better with existing means and methods
  • 1:16 - 1:18
they had created. We would never had
  • 1:18 - 1:20
made the support breakthrough if we hadn't got
  • 1:20 - 1:22
out there and talked to people at the very start
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    of the project.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
Thanks Adam! The next stage in the process is called
  • 1:26 - 1:28
Ideate. You and your design team will analyse what
  • 1:28 - 1:31
you learned, and begin brainstorming new ideas. This
  • 1:31 - 1:35
part of HCD involves lots of post-it notes.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
"First, to capture everything you've heard out in the field,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    and organise them into themes.
  • 1:42 - 1:47
From there, you start to brainstorm and generate ideas
  • 1:47 - 1:53
really quickly, and for that being visual is key.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
The last stage in the course is Prototyping.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
You'll gain the skills to build and test your ideas with real
  • 1:59 - 2:02
people. Most importantly, you'll learn to iterate
  • 2:02 - 2:06
and evolve your ideas until you get them right.
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    Let's hear from the shop.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
"When we wanted to test a new model for selling
  • 2:09 - 2:12
low-cost, clean water in Kenya, we couldn't spend
  • 2:12 - 2:15
a lot of time thinking about what it would look like.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
Instead we went out, got some uniforms. We also
  • 2:18 - 2:22
made some posters, got a kiosk, and sold some items!
  • 2:22 - 2:26
The key was getting feedback from real people about
  • 2:26 - 2:29
whether or not they'd buy the product.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    Want some water?
  • 2:31 - 2:34
We created this course to give you the skills
  • 2:34 - 2:37
and confidence you'll need to begin designing
  • 2:37 -
    solutions yourself. Sign up today!
