Human-Centered Design for Social Innovation
-
0:04 - 0:08Hi! My name is Sean, and I work for IDEO.org.
-
0:08 - 0:10I'm here today to tell you about an exciting
-
0:10 - 0:12human-centred design workshop that we created
-
0:12 - 0:16with Acumen. Human Centred Design starts with people,
-
0:16 - 0:18and we place people at the centre of each stage
-
0:18 - 0:23of the design process. HCD is about getting out there, prototyping rapidly
-
0:23 - 0:30and iterating until we get our ideas right. This workshop, just like the HCD process,
-
0:30 - 0:34begins with discovery. As part of this course, you'll learn
-
0:34 - 0:38interviewing skills and other design methods to give you the
-
0:38 - 0:41confidence to get out there and start the HCD process
-
0:41 - 0:44yourself. Let's hear from one of our designers:
-
0:44 - 0:48I was on an ideo.org project last year in Mexico, and
-
0:48 - 0:52we were focused on helping low-income people save
-
0:52 - 0:55more easily. One of the things we went into the
-
0:55 - 0:58field thinking was that people never had bank accounts
-
0:58 - 1:00but we found that many had had bank accounts but
-
1:00 - 1:03gave them up due to bad experiences and instead
-
1:03 - 1:06had developed all sorts of innovative ways to save
-
1:06 - 1:09in their communities, families, between friends. So what we
-
1:09 - 1:13ended up doing was shifting the focus of the project
-
1:13 - 1:16to help them save better with existing means and methods
-
1:16 - 1:18they had created. We would never had
-
1:18 - 1:20made the support breakthrough if we hadn't got
-
1:20 - 1:22out there and talked to people at the very start
-
1:22 - 1:24of the project.
-
1:24 - 1:26Thanks Adam! The next stage in the process is called
-
1:26 - 1:28Ideate. You and your design team will analyse what
-
1:28 - 1:31you learned, and begin brainstorming new ideas. This
-
1:31 - 1:35part of HCD involves lots of post-it notes.
-
1:35 - 1:40"First, to capture everything you've heard out in the field,
-
1:40 - 1:42and organise them into themes.
-
1:42 - 1:47From there, you start to brainstorm and generate ideas
-
1:47 - 1:53really quickly, and for that being visual is key.
-
1:53 - 1:56The last stage in the course is Prototyping.
-
1:56 - 1:59You'll gain the skills to build and test your ideas with real
-
1:59 - 2:02people. Most importantly, you'll learn to iterate
-
2:02 - 2:06and evolve your ideas until you get them right.
-
2:06 - 2:07Let's hear from the shop.
-
2:07 - 2:09"When we wanted to test a new model for selling
-
2:09 - 2:12low-cost, clean water in Kenya, we couldn't spend
-
2:12 - 2:15a lot of time thinking about what it would look like.
-
2:15 - 2:18Instead we went out, got some uniforms. We also
-
2:18 - 2:22made some posters, got a kiosk, and sold some items!
-
2:22 - 2:26The key was getting feedback from real people about
-
2:26 - 2:29whether or not they'd buy the product.
-
2:29 - 2:31Want some water?
-
2:31 - 2:34We created this course to give you the skills
-
2:34 - 2:37and confidence you'll need to begin designing
-
2:37 -solutions yourself. Sign up today!
