MYOO Articulate 3° 17' S, 52° 12' W Belo Monte Animation

  • 0:00 - 0:03
MYOO, the team that brought you the Plastiki is on expedition again,
  • 0:03 - 0:07
this time with a unique adventure from our Articulate series,
  • 0:07 - 0:09
which combines art and adventure to give nature a voice.
  • 0:12 - 0:16
From the first of November we'll be in Brazil to visit the site of the proposed Belo Monte dam,
  • 0:16 - 0:20
which is a hugely ambitious and controversial hydroelectric project,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
that will divert flow of the mighty Xingu River.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
The Brazilian goverment is adamant that the dam is necessary to safeguard the economic future
  • 0:27 - 0:29
of all of Brazil, but many people disagree.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
The Belo Monte actually consists of three dams,
  • 0:32 - 0:37
the principle one of which will be located at the head of the Volta Grande, or Big Bend section of the river,
  • 0:37 - 0:42
where it will divert 80% of the river's flow into a manmade canal
  • 0:42 - 0:45
that will feed the giant turbines in the second dam.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
In the process of generating this vast store of potential energy,
  • 0:48 - 0:54
the dam will create an enormous reservoir, that will reach back as far as the town of Altamira,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
and inundate many thousands of acres of rainforest.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
For many people, the creation of this lake is indicative of why they are against the project,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
which they believe is driven more by ego than simple common sense.
  • 1:06 - 1:11
For instance, it is commonly anticipated that the acres and acres of forest that will be flooded
  • 1:11 - 1:15
will begin to rot and release hundreds of thousands of tons of methane into the atmosphere,
  • 1:15 - 1:19
making this dam no cleaner in its emissions than a coal-fired power station.
  • 1:21 - 1:25
In the town of Altamira, the flood waters are expected to reach deep into the favelas,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
displacing many of the poorest and most vulnerable,
  • 1:28 - 1:33
and in the process, compounding issues such as illegal logging and ranching that people will be forced into
  • 1:33 - 1:35
as they struggle to rebuild their lives.
  • 1:36 - 1:41
But perhaps one of the saddest consequences of all is what will happen to the people of the Volta Grande,
  • 1:41 - 1:43
who like so many other indigenous people
  • 1:43 - 1:46
will be willfully deprived of the resources that they fight so hard
  • 1:46 - 1:48
to preserve for the benefit for all of us.
  • 1:49 - 1:54
It is predicted that the diversion of up to 80% of the Xingu's normal flow
  • 1:54 - 1:56
will cause a permanent drought on the Volta Grande.
  • 1:57 - 2:02
This will effectively deprive the region's Juruna and Waura peoples of their livelihood
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    and force their displacement.
  • 2:05 - 2:10
MYOO is going to travel to the Volta Grande to spend time with the diverse group of people who live there
  • 2:10 - 2:15
and celebrate with them now what may surely be lost for future generations.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
We intend to team up with the children in these communities and build a giant folk totem,
  • 2:20 - 2:25
which we'll decorate with carvings that celebrate the unique biodiversity of the region.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
We'll then take the totem and place it in the river at the dam site,
  • 2:30 - 2:36
where it will stand as a celebration of what may be lost as well as a representation of a Juruna ancestral myth.
  • 2:37 - 2:43
