Introduction to Latch - Serge Thompson

  • 0:06 - 0:08
    >> Steve Bruner: Welcome to the WordPress New York City Meetup
  • 0:08 - 0:15
Serge is going to be our first presenter, He's going to talk about a plugin he wrote called Latch. Serge, come over here.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    >> Serge Thompson: I hope everyone's doing well tonight.
  • 0:17 - 0:20
As Steve said I'm from Latch,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
and what i've developed is a a mobile
    application
  • 0:23 - 0:28
our goal is to get rid of usernames
    and passwords and
  • 0:28 - 0:33
we've built a plugin for word press that
    allows you to
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    login with your phone
  • 0:35 - 0:37
and uh... and you can uh
  • 0:37 - 0:41
post to vet website or the blog that
    you've logged on to.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
So uh... you're lucky today the demo is
    very quick
  • 0:45 - 0:47
uh... but that's kind of the power of
    that
  • 0:47 - 0:50
and where the use comes in.
  • 0:50 - 0:57
i'll just show you, this is our website,
and the application will be released soon
  • 0:57 - 1:02
to the app store. You can get updates via
email address if you put it in
  • 1:02 - 1:02
    here.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    I'll just scroll down.
  • 1:05 - 1:12
This gives a very brief overview but
I'll click the demo right here.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    so this isa typical social
    login
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    uh... structure plugin
  • 1:18 - 1:24
with our latch application uh... login
procedure, so all you do if you want to
  • 1:24 - 1:28
log into the site, and uh... add anything
    to the blog,
  • 1:28 - 1:32
is you would tap on this L right here,
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    on the lower left there,
  • 1:34 - 1:35
    and then
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    it contacts
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    the Latch
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    uh... ID provider.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    And uh... I can
  • 1:43 - 1:47
walk way over here but it's easier to
kind of scan fromright here, but
  • 1:47 - 1:50
you take out your mobile application
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    and
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    the latch application,
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    and you open the app,
  • 1:55 - 1:58
and you simply point it at the QR code,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    and i'll do that here.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
It's a little bit easier here.
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    And it scans it,
  • 2:03 - 2:08
and then logs you in instantly s0
    don't have to...
  • 2:08 - 2:11
Where this is really useful is
  • 2:11 - 2:16
if you want to create a account on the
site you don't have to 'create account'.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
You download the application and then
  • 2:19 - 2:22
you uh... go to the sites, you see this
    Latch
  • 2:22 - 2:27
icon and you login, and you can
instantly share on that site, create an
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    account and
  • 2:30 - 2:33
and um, kind of move forward from there. So i can
show you that you're logged in
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    uh...
  • 2:35 - 2:39
on the upper right it says 'Howdy the latch user'
    there
  • 2:39 - 2:45
    and
  • 2:45 - 2:48
you can then go to like the news,
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    uh...
  • 2:49 - 2:54
and you can leave a comment,
  • 2:54 - 2:58
and your login as this user uh... you
    leave the comment
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    and um... can
  • 3:00 - 3:01
    proceed from there.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
So, I think it's a good way of
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    really
  • 3:06 - 3:11
uh... getting rid of usernames and
passwords, and it's useful for the
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    WordPress area right now.
  • 3:13 - 3:14
    Um,
  • 3:14 - 3:17
but i really wan to make into a bigger
    thing, so
  • 3:17 - 3:19
it's based on the same structure
  • 3:19 - 3:24
as uh... like facebook login and, and
    google login and, and,
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    Twitter login.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
So it's all the same infrastructure,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
and yet it's applied to WordPress in this
    situation.
  • 3:32 - 3:36
So a quick demo, but you can see it's a
very easy way of logging in
  • 3:36 - 3:42
uh... you can forget about usernames and
password, ,making new accounts and things,
  • 3:42 - 3:44
and you will get to augment
  • 3:44 - 3:49
uh... security features. I mean down the line
what we want to implement is facial recognition,
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    voice recognition,
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    Things.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    uh...
  • 3:52 - 3:56
When you want to improve security in
    different areas
  • 3:56 - 4:00
So this is what we have right now. This is where we are
starting and uh... pretty excited to you get
  • 4:00 - 4:04
this plugin out . It;s on the site um...
  • 4:04 - 4:07
and then, yeah, if you wanna find out more
    about the application,
  • 4:07 - 4:12
uh... just throw youe email in and we'll
    you know and uh...
  • 4:12 - 4:14
is too great to share this with you guys tonight.
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    Thank you very much.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    >> Steve Bruner: [inaudible] some questions. >> Serge Thonpson: Oh yeah, questions.
  • 4:21 - 4:28
    >> Steve Bruner: So the idea is that your phone knows who you are.
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    sandifer
  • 4:31 - 4:37
yourself dozen ads yet so uh... news
download applications you put your email
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    in
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    this sent the link
  • 4:40 - 4:44
you go to your email you authorize it
saying that um... he sent this link to
  • 4:44 - 4:47
the email and i want to offer rides
    application
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    and then the ap is
  • 4:49 - 4:53
active so you can log into any different
    site that has
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    this latch involvement
  • 4:55 - 4:57
    tuesday
  • 4:57 - 5:03
    yet use that
  • 5:03 - 5:06
    connect identity
  • 5:06 - 5:11
yet it builds like uh... are very alight
    profile
  • 5:11 - 5:14
uh... for each time so right now
  • 5:14 - 5:18
    guilds on
  • 5:18 - 5:19
    heidi here
  • 5:19 - 5:26
and uh... believing you can build on
    that
  • 5:33 - 5:36
    uh... it's more just a
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    of lightning gration
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    before just
  • 5:39 - 5:46
what do you want to like blog on the
    site or uh... considered
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    his
  • 5:49 - 5:54
so it was the oldest habits latched user
    id ray here
  • 5:54 - 5:58
    uh... but
  • 5:58 - 6:05
expand upon that waited on the uh...
will kind of build on that
  • 6:07 - 6:14
    dahlia that's that
  • 6:16 - 6:18
    utilized
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    log on
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    stand for
  • 6:22 - 6:29
    field
  • 6:34 - 6:36
    not no
  • 6:36 - 6:39
yeah so this gets past that
  • 6:39 - 6:42
and uh... i mean it's nice because you
    actually have the physical phone
  • 6:42 - 6:44
    uh...
  • 6:44 - 6:49
with the camera and and uh... a voice
    for the next thing
  • 6:49 - 6:51
one oh add on to say if you're doing
  • 6:51 - 6:58
    financial transactions things like that
    dot
  • 7:01 - 7:04
    uh... just dug
  • 7:04 - 7:10
it can be ported to any fun
  • 7:10 - 7:11
    never forget
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    profile for us
  • 7:13 - 7:17
    briefly for you
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    it is the issue
  • 7:20 - 7:22
    here
  • 7:22 - 7:26
yelling right now we just have this
    simple structure right now
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    um...
  • 7:27 - 7:31
what yeah we're planning to do or what i
would like to do is build a lot more
  • 7:31 - 7:32
    features
  • 7:32 - 7:36
in in the great as much as we can with
    other uh...
  • 7:36 - 7:39
alike avatars and things report back
  • 7:39 - 7:41
so uh... 'cause those are all through
  • 7:41 - 7:46
this the standards that are marching
wichita open it the or standards and
  • 7:46 - 7:46
    that's why the
  • 7:46 - 7:49
things like this are making a more
    possible
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    uh... or
  • 7:50 - 7:54
the uh... those standards are making
    things like this possible
  • 7:54 - 7:55
    making the
  • 7:55 - 7:58
uh... atmosphere will be easier for
  • 7:58 - 7:59
    intense uh...
  • 7:59 - 8:05
    security
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    now so that changes
  • 8:07 - 8:07
    are
  • 8:07 - 8:11
depending on any of the sites you go on
    to the states
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    it's specific to you
  • 8:13 - 8:16
    exacts uh... web expiry
  • 8:16 - 8:19
so wherever you travel like you can go
    from computer computer
  • 8:19 - 8:24
and it recognizes you selva this just
  • 8:24 - 8:26
    the if you are address
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    information and then i gave
  • 8:28 - 8:29
    the phone has
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    my identity information
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    and it just
  • 8:32 - 8:34
    uh... links them together
  • 8:34 - 8:41
using one very like fluid easy
    experience
  • 8:55 - 8:57
we don't have that in the great
  • 8:57 - 9:00
this is more of like an active thing
  • 9:00 - 9:06
um... and so it would be yeah a display
    that changes like
  • 9:06 - 9:09
    uh... immediately nice going
  • 9:09 - 9:09
    angle
  • 9:09 - 9:13
you go to the gas stations they have
their screens in front of you and that
  • 9:13 - 9:19
shows that you are coding is paid for it
    that way
  • 9:19 - 9:21
    hope
  • 9:21 - 9:25
but uh... want to be will be at work
rest on or great now it's a lot on our
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    website
  • 9:27 - 9:31
    uh...
  • 9:31 - 9:33
but it's it's very simple so
  • 9:33 - 9:36
use downloaded it's that's right here
  • 9:36 - 9:38
uh... and use install it and then
  • 9:38 - 9:41
there's a provider lest in new jobs
  • 9:41 - 9:46
uh... in able the latch one and then
it's done so that's all you have to do
  • 9:46 - 9:50
but you'll see a provider list and you
just scroll down those you have the
  • 9:50 - 9:53
typical ones you have face book through
    google on twitter and
  • 9:53 - 9:56
and all the similar ones that you can
    mabel
  • 9:56 - 9:59
and then we have our laps one enabled as
    well
  • 9:59 - 10:02
so it's all on the same platform
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    goodies
  • 10:04 - 10:06
    explain
  • 10:06 - 10:07
    allowances
  • 10:07 - 10:11
yet yet because the communities build
    off of a structure of
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    uh... the
  • 10:13 - 10:15
    social login pieces and so
  • 10:15 - 10:17
    i wanted to
  • 10:17 - 10:21
    basically use that infrastructure so
    that
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    uh...
  • 10:22 - 10:23
    it's
  • 10:23 - 10:26
it's kind of fluid throughout it uh...
  • 10:26 - 10:29
    it's uh...
  • 10:29 - 10:30
    it's and
  • 10:30 - 10:34
i mean just using the standards and the
    infrastructure that's already there that
  • 10:34 - 10:41
    people are trust yet
  • 10:45 - 10:48
we have long-term yeah so i mean arrived
  • 10:48 - 10:52
develop the company right now and died
just kind of at the beginning of doing
  • 10:52 - 10:59
the releasing and and uh... getting
    everything out there
  • 11:01 - 11:03
    so
  • 11:03 - 11:07
misstep is just on the first up is the
    phone and then
  • 11:07 - 11:09
    um...
  • 11:09 - 11:11
keeping it that way right now
  • 11:11 - 11:12
    until
  • 11:12 - 11:17
uh... we developed that yet some or use
    some atr_s in airdrie
  • 11:17 - 11:18
    uh... facial recognition
  • 11:18 - 11:19
    when things like that
  • 11:19 - 11:23
for higher level things in at the higher
level of kind of walking because
  • 11:23 - 11:24
    these ones
  • 11:24 - 11:29
i mean he probably when you want to be
    trouble the with having two
  • 11:29 - 11:33
do anything for a commissioned pieces
    like that
  • 11:33 - 11:40
so we'll be penna depending on the
    situation
  • 11:44 - 11:50
yeah so we're working on standards that
are already out there the open ideal wv
  • 11:50 - 11:51
    systems
  • 11:51 - 11:54
and that this is just kind of an
    additive peace which
  • 11:54 - 12:01
much simpler i mean and using the phone
    about stuff
  • 12:01 - 12:02
thank you very much of a
