    I would argue that it is this chemical reaction:

    a nitrogen gas molecule

    plus three hydrogen gas molecules
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    gets you two ammonia gas molecules.

    This is the Haber process
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    of binding nitrogen molecules in the air
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    to hydrogen molecules,
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    or turning air into fertilizer.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    Without this reaction,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    farmers would be capable of producing enough food
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    for only 4 billion people;
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    our current population is just over 7 billion people.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    So, without the Haber process,
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    over 3 billion people would be without food.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    You see, nitrogen in the form of nitrate, NO3,
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    is an essential nutrient for plants to survive.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    As crops grow, they consume the nitrogen,
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    removing it from the soil.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    The nitrogen can be replenished
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    through long, natural fertilization processes
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    like decaying animals,
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    but humans want to grow food
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    much faster than that.
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    Now, here's the frustrating part:
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    78% of the air is composed of nitrogen,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    but crops can't just take nitrogen from the air
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    because it contains very strong triple bonds,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    which crops cannot break.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    What Haber did basically
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    was figure out a way
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    to take this nitrogen in the air
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    and put it into the ground.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    In 1908, the German chemist Fritz Haber
  • 1:35 - 1:36
    developed a chemical method
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    for utilizing the vast supply of nitrogen in the air.
  • 1:39 - 1:40
    Haber found a method
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    which took the nitrogen in the air
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    and bonded it to hydrogen
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    to form ammonia.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    Ammonia can then be injected into the soil,
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    where it is quickly converted into nitrate.
  • 1:51 - 1:53
    But if Haber's process was going to be used
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    to feed the world,
  • 1:55 - 1:55
    he would need to find a way
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    to create a lot of this ammonia quickly and easily.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    In order to understand
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    how Haber accomplished this feat,
  • 2:02 - 2:02
    we need to know something
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    about chemical equilibrium.
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    Chemical equilibrium can be achieved
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    when you have a reaction in a closed container.
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    For example, let's say you put
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    hydrogen and nitrogen into a closed container
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    and allow them to react.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    In the beginning of the experiment,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    we have a lot of nitrogen and hydrogen,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    so the formation of ammonia
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    proceeds at a high speed.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    But as the hydrogen and nitrogen react
  • 2:27 - 2:28
    and get used up,
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    the reaction slows down
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    because there is less nitrogen and hydrogen
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    in the container.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
    Eventually, the ammonia molecules reach a point
  • 2:36 - 2:38
    where they start to decompose
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    back into the nitrogen and hydrogen.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    After a while, the two reactions,
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    creating and breaking down ammonia,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    will reach the same speed.
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    When these speeds are equal,
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    we say the reaction has reached equilibrium.

    This might sound good, but it's not
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    when what you want
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    is to just create a ton of ammonia.

    Haber doesn't want the ammonia
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    to break down at all,
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    but if you simply leave the reaction
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    in a closed container,
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    that's what will happen.

    Here's where Henry Le Chatelier,
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    a French chemist,
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    can help.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    What he found was
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    that if you take a system in equilibrium
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    and you add something to it,
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    like, say, nitrogen,
  • 3:18 - 3:19
    the system will work
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    to get back to equilibrium again.
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    Le Chatelier also found
  • 3:22 - 3:23
    that if you increase
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    the amount of pressure on a system,
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    the system tries to work
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    to return to the pressure it had.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    It's like being in a crowded room.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    The more molecules there are,
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    the more pressure there is.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    If we look back at our equation,
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    we see that on the left-hand side,
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    there are four molecules on the left
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    and just two on the right.

    So, if we want the room to be less crowded,
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    and therefore have less pressure,
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    the system will start
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    combining nitrogen and hydrogen
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    to make the more compact ammonia molecules.

    Haber realized that in order to make
  • 3:54 - 3:55
    large amounts of ammonia,
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    he would have to create a machine
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    that would continually add nitrogen and hydrogen

    while also increasing the pressure
  • 4:01 - 4:03
    on the equilibrium system,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    which is exactly what he did.

    Today, ammonia is one of the most produced
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    chemical compounds in the world.
  • 4:10 - 4:15
    Roughly 131 million metric tons are produced a year,
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    which is about 290 billion pounds of ammonia.
  • 4:18 - 4:19
    That's about the mass
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    of 30 million African elephants,
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    weighing roughly 10,000 pounds each.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    80% of this ammonia is used in fertilizer production,
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    while the rest is used
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    in industrial and household cleaners
  • 4:31 - 4:33
    and to produce other nitrogen compounds,
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    such as nitric acid.
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    Recent studies have found
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    that half of the nitrogen from these fertilizers
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    is not assimilated by plants.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    Consequently, the nitrogen is found
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    as a volatile chemical compound
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    in the Earth's water supplies and atmosphere,
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    severely damaging our environment.
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    Of course, Haber did not foresee this problem
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    when he introduced his invention.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    Following his pioneering vision,
  • 4:55 - 4:56
    scientists today are looking
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    for a new Haber process of the 21st century,
  • 4:59 - 5:01
    which will reach the same level of aid
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    without the dangerous consequences.
