The orchestra in my mouth

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    My name is Tom,
  • 0:02 - 0:05
and I've come here today to come clean
  • 0:05 - 0:09
about what I do for money.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
Basically, I use my mouth in strange ways
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    in exchange for cash.
  • 0:14 - 0:15
    (Laughter)
  • 0:15 - 0:19
I usually do this kind of thing
    in seedy downtown bars
  • 0:19 - 0:20
    and on street corners,
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    so this mightn't be
    the most appropriate setting,
  • 0:23 - 0:27
but I'd like to give you guys
    a bit of a demonstration
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    about what I do.
  • 0:34 - 0:43
    (Beatboxing)
  • 2:02 - 2:06
And now, for my next number,
  • 2:06 - 2:10
I'd like to return to the classics.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    (Applause)
  • 2:12 - 2:15
We're going to take it back,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    way back,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    back into time.
  • 2:22 - 2:30
    (Beatboxing: "Billie Jean")
  • 2:42 - 2:46
♫ Billie Jean is not my lover ♫
  • 2:46 - 2:51
    ♫ She's just a girl who claims
that I am the one ♫
  • 2:51 - 2:55
♫ But the kid is not my son ♫
  • 2:55 - 3:00
    (Applause) All right.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    Wassup.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
    Thank you very much, TEDx.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    If you guys haven't
    figured it out already,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
my name's Tom Thum, and I'm a beatboxer,
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    which means all the sounds
    that you just heard
  • 3:14 - 3:17
were made entirely using just my voice,
  • 3:17 - 3:19
and the only thing was my voice.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    And I can assure you
  • 3:21 - 3:26
    there are absolutely no effects
  • 3:26 - 3:31
    on this microphone whatsoever.
  • 3:31 - 3:33
And I'm very, very stoked —
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    (Applause)
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    You guys are just applauding
    for everything. It's great.
  • 3:38 - 3:43
Look at this, Mom! I made it!
  • 3:43 - 3:46
I'm very, very stoked to be here today,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    representing my kinfolk
  • 3:48 - 3:51
    and all those that haven't
    managed to make a career
  • 3:51 - 3:55
    out of an innate ability
    for inhuman noisemaking.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
Because it is a bit of a niche market,
  • 3:58 - 4:00
and there's not much work going on,
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    especially where I'm from.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    You know, I'm from Brisbane,
  • 4:03 - 4:04
which is a great city to live in.
  • 4:05 - 4:07
Yeah! All right! Most of Brisbane's here.
    That's good.
  • 4:07 - 4:09
    (Laughter)
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    You know, I'm from Brizzy,
  • 4:11 - 4:13
which is a great city to live in,
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    but let's be honest --
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    it's not exactly the cultural
    hub of the Southern Hemisphere.
  • 4:18 - 4:22
So I do a lot of my work outside Brisbane
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    and outside Australia,
  • 4:23 - 4:26
and so the pursuit of this
    crazy passion of mine
  • 4:26 - 4:28
    has enabled me to see
  • 4:28 - 4:30
so many amazing places in the world.
  • 4:30 - 4:36
So I'd like to share with you,
    if I may, my experiences.
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    So ladies and gentlemen,
  • 4:38 - 4:41
I would like to take you on a journey
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    throughout the continents
  • 4:42 - 4:46
    and throughout sound itself.
  • 4:46 - 4:51
    We start our journey
    in the central deserts.
  • 4:51 - 5:01
    (Didgeridoo)
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    (Airplane)
  • 5:04 - 5:06
    India.
  • 5:06 - 5:20
    (Beatboxing)
  • 5:20 - 5:25
    (Sitar)
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    China.
  • 5:27 - 5:40
    (Guzheng)
  • 5:40 - 5:46
    (Beatboxing)
  • 5:47 - 5:49
    Germany.
  • 5:49 - 6:02
    (Beatboxing)
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    Party, party, yeah.
  • 6:09 - 6:14
    (Laughter)
  • 6:14 - 6:17
And before we reach our final destination,
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    ladies and gentlemen,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    I would like to share
    with you some technology
  • 6:21 - 6:25
that I brought all the way
from the thriving metropolis of Brisbane.
  • 6:25 - 6:29
These things in front of me
    here are called Kaoss Pads,
  • 6:29 - 6:32
and they allow me to do a whole
    lot of different things
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    with my voice.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
For example, the one on the left here
  • 6:36 - 6:38
    allows me to add
  • 6:39 - 6:42
a little bit of reverb to my sound,
  • 6:42 - 6:43
    which gives me that --
  • 6:43 - 6:49
    (Trumpet) --
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    flavor.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    (Laughter)
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    And the other ones here,
  • 6:54 - 6:56
I can use them in unison
  • 6:56 - 6:59
to mimic the effect of a drum machine
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    or something like that.
  • 7:00 - 7:03
I can sample in my own sounds
and I can play it back
  • 7:03 - 7:08
just by hitting the pads here.
  • 7:08 - 7:22
    (Noises)
  • 7:22 - 7:28
    TEDx.
  • 7:28 - 7:36
    (Music)
  • 7:46 - 7:50
    (Applause)
  • 7:50 - 7:54
I got way too much time on my hands.
  • 7:54 - 7:56
    And last but not least,
  • 7:56 - 7:59
the one on my right here allows me to
  • 7:59 - 8:02
loop loop loop loop loop loop loop loop
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    my voice.
  • 8:05 - 8:08
So with all that in mind,
    ladies and gentlemen,
  • 8:08 - 8:11
I would like to take you on a journey
  • 8:11 - 8:13
to a completely separate part of Earth
  • 8:13 - 8:16
as I transform the Sydney Opera House
  • 8:16 - 8:20
into a smoky downtown jazz bar.
  • 8:20 - 8:24
All right boys, take it away.
  • 8:24 - 8:28
    (Music)
  • 8:33 - 8:35
    Ladies and gentlemen,
    I'd like to introduce you
  • 8:35 - 8:37
to a very special friend of mine,
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    one of the greatest
    double bassists I know.
  • 8:39 - 8:44
    Mr. Smokey Jefferson, let's take
it for a walk. Come on, baby.
  • 8:44 - 8:50
    (Music)
  • 9:27 - 9:28
    All right, ladies and gentlemen,
  • 9:28 - 9:31
    I'd like to introduce you
to the star of the show,
  • 9:31 - 9:33
    one of the greatest jazz
    legends of our time.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
Music lovers and jazz lovers alike,
  • 9:36 - 9:38
please give a warm hand of applause
  • 9:38 - 9:42
for the one and only Mr. Peeping Tom.
    Take it away.
  • 9:42 - 9:46
    (Music)
  • 9:46 - 9:53
    (Applause)
  • 11:02 - 11:04
Thank you. Thank you very much.
  • 11:04 - 11:09
    (Applause)
