New learning style by kids for kids: Soto Yamauchi at TEDxKids@Chiyoda

  • 0:18 - 0:20
I am the the first prize winner
  • 0:20 - 0:23
of a programing contest last year.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
So, I am a little programmer.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    Today, I will show you
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    a revolutionary new learning style
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    from my experience.
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    Since I was very young,
  • 0:36 - 0:41
    I've loved making things.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    and I was always
    playing with blocks and bricks.
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    When I was 6,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
my father gave me an old PC,
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    and I enjoyed making
    stop-motion animation,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
newsletters, and so on with that PC.
  • 0:58 - 1:02
    I was about 8, I made this.
  • 1:13 - 1:17
    (Applause)
  • 1:20 - 1:23
At the age of 10, I went to a library,
  • 1:23 - 1:27
and I came across a book on programing.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
When you look at this, what do you see?
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    It attracted me so much,
  • 1:35 - 1:39
because it looked like a magic wand.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
If I got it, I can make anything I like.
  • 1:44 - 1:48
I've been into programming since then.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    And now,
I'm a junior high school student.
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    One morning,
  • 1:55 - 1:59
I happened to see some impressive news.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    It said, Japanese Prime Minister,
  • 2:02 - 2:03
    Shinzo Abe's government,
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    proposed a slogan.
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    It's called the "Three Arrows".
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    The first, Bold Monetary Policy.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
The second, Flexible and Fiscal Policy.
  • 2:13 - 2:16
    The third, Growth Strategy.
  • 2:17 - 2:21
To achieve the Growth Strategy, he said,
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    I.T strategy will continue
    to be a major pillar
  • 2:24 - 2:27
of his growth strategy into the future.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    Then I thought,
  • 2:30 - 2:34
"What can I do for our world
    as a little programmer?"
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    After hearing the third policy,
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    I found the answer.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    That is,
  • 2:42 - 2:45
I should share my programming skills
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    and knowledge with kids.
  • 2:47 - 2:48
    I should make
  • 2:48 - 2:51
an easy programming workshop for kids.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    But,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
    what kind of programming workshop
  • 2:56 - 2:57
    should I make?
  • 2:58 - 3:01
We can teach how to program to the kids.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
Who understand about kids the most?
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    Parents?
  • 3:07 - 3:08
    No.
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    Teachers?
  • 3:09 - 3:10
    No.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    It's kids.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
Because we belong to the same generation,
  • 3:16 - 3:20
    so we can share
our skill and knowledge as an equal.
  • 3:22 - 3:26
    After I reached this answer,
    I moved forward.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    At first, I introduced
    the fun of programming
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    to my classmates.
  • 3:32 - 3:36
And as I conveyed my thought,
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    they agreed with me
  • 3:37 - 3:41
that we made programming group named -
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    "It is IT".
  • 3:44 - 3:47
We named it because we hope that
  • 3:47 - 3:50
it is I.T that will be useful as a tool
  • 3:50 - 3:53
for us to learn much more in the future.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    And we use the phrase:
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    "Programming Workshop of the Kids,
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    by the kids,
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    for the kids"
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    as our slogan.
  • 4:04 - 4:08
    Teachers also agreed to
    our plan and cheered.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
Their attitude encouraged us so much.
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    Last month,
  • 4:16 - 4:19
we held the programming workshop for kids
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    at our school festival.
  • 4:24 - 4:28
    We used a programming language
    called "Scratch",
  • 4:28 - 4:31
and explained how to make a game.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    It was a huge success.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    Participants made their own game
  • 4:40 - 4:42
    and enjoyed programming.
  • 4:44 - 4:45
    Not only teenagers,
  • 4:45 - 4:48
but also kindergarten children and adults
  • 4:48 - 4:50
    came to join our workshop.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    Now, I believe,
  • 4:54 - 4:59
there are some things that only kids can do.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    Today, I spoke about
    my programming workshop,
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    but it's just an example.
  • 5:07 - 5:09
    This new learning style -
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    kids sharing with kids -
  • 5:11 - 5:13
will be useful in other fields, too.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    Please look at this picture.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    Green circle represents a teacher,
  • 5:19 - 5:23
and yellow triangle represents the kids.
  • 5:23 - 5:27
Nowadays, it's more common for adults
  • 5:27 - 5:29
to do all of their teaching.
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    Yet I believe,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
kids have their special abilities too.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
And it is kids, like me,
  • 5:38 - 5:40
that can help other kids gain
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    more skills and knowledge.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
Kids sharing with kids, in fact,
  • 5:47 - 5:50
may be the easiest way for kids to learn.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
    Because learning happens
    while having fun.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
So I would like to ask for help
  • 5:59 - 6:01
to spread this new learning style.
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    And we need
  • 6:04 - 6:07
the chance to share our information
  • 6:08 - 6:12
    and support of teachers, parents
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    and other adults.
  • 6:14 - 6:17
    So please believe in
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    our skills,
  • 6:20 - 6:23
    in our knowledge,
  • 6:23 - 6:25
    and most importantly,
  • 6:25 - 6:27
    in our possibilities.
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    Thank you.
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    (Applause)
