Campagne Indiegogo du Germoir Indiegogo campain

  • 0:03 - 0:05
    No longer a marginal speech,
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Climate change is finally urging
    the international community
  • 0:07 - 0:11
and communities in general to act now.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    While the IPCC experts announce
that the point of no return
  • 0:14 - 0:17
will be reached in the next decade
    if nothing is done,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
NASA warns us that many human civilizations
    collapsed under their own weight,
  • 0:20 - 0:24
insisting that the elite did nothing
    to prevent the disaster.
  • 0:24 - 0:29
    We must change course, ourselves,
    and the sooner, the better.
  • 0:29 - 0:34
In solidarity with rising and future generations,
  • 0:34 - 0:38
In solidarity with the people currenlty being exploited for our own comfort,
  • 0:38 - 0:42
Because the ecosystems we inhabit have limits
    and of course possibilities
  • 0:42 - 0:46
Let's get organized to live better.
  • 0:47 - 0:53
We choose to participate in the inevitable transition by offering a prototype
  • 0:53 - 0:57
    of technical and social practices
    that are bearing resilience.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
    Resilience designates the capacity
    to rebound, to adapt.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
This resilience will be supported by Le Germoir,
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    which will provide infrastructure
    and support for initiatives
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    rooted in the renewable resources
    of the immediate area.
  • 1:13 - 1:16
Le Germoirs' startup team brings together
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    a variety of complementary know-hows,
  • 1:18 - 1:22
    from accounting to collective cooking,
    permaculture and more.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
But most importantly, our main strength
  • 1:25 - 1:28
is a network of enthusiastic allies,
    built throughout the years,
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    sharing experiences within different collectives.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
To make real this cooperative project,
  • 1:34 - 1:37
building the floors, building the offices,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
we sent a big call-out for a great bee,
  • 1:40 - 1:44
it warmed our hearts to see that more than 150 people came to help us last summer,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
bringing their enthousiam, their curiosity, their know-hows, their experiences,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    and it was amazing!
  • 1:52 - 1:58
Most of Le Germoir’s members and their allies have met through the CESA, Centre d’écologie solidaire et appliquée.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
It includes collective decision making, task sharing,
  • 2:00 - 2:07
gardening, conflict resolution, mechanic and building skills
  • 2:07 - 2:10
CESA is active since 2007. It's a transitional space.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
In fact, Le Germoir was born because some people wanted
  • 2:14 - 2:17
to establish themselves more permanently in the region.
  • 2:21 - 2:26
The co-op is located in the Saint-Louis area in Carleton-sur-Mer, in the Chaleur Bay.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
This area has been home to many villages in the past, the are now closed or so,
  • 2:30 - 2:35
offering unused farmland as well as nearby vast forests.
  • 2:35 - 2:40
We se an inspiring potential in our locality and in many other Gaspesie communities
  • 2:40 - 2:43
who are facing similar vitality challenges.
  • 2:43 - 2:47
A majority of these localities possess structures such as barns, churches
  • 2:47 - 2:51
and factories that could be beneficial for collective usage.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
Here, it is in a barn, la Grange à Pit, that we are building a rural laboratory
  • 2:55 - 2:57
to revitalise the collectivity and to promote local resilience.
  • 2:57 - 3:00
This way, we will realize experiences that other communities can possibly replicate
  • 3:00 - 3:06
The fact that we share these infrastuctures not only allows us savings for everyone
  • 3:06 - 3:09
but it generates creativity, a creative synergy
  • 3:09 - 3:14
It's more attracting, in the sense that it's what I want to see for my kids
  • 3:14 - 3:17
The kids are more and more integrated in the coop
  • 3:17 - 3:21
and we want these values and skills to be transmited to the kids
  • 3:21 - 3:24
so we can start an other cycle
  • 3:29 - 3:33
The Gaspesie region is actually being targeted by the hydrocarbon industry
  • 3:33 - 3:37
which is basically hoping to extract oil by drilling and fracking the ground.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
Needless to say, this  would seriously compromise chances of local resilience,
  • 3:41 - 3:43
among others because of water contamination
  • 3:45 - 3:50
The technological choices of the coop are anchored in our analysis of the global context
  • 3:50 - 3:55
We want energy efficiency, we don't have lot's of money, and we live in a cold climate
  • 3:55 - 4:00
The success of the Germoir as a prototype and its ability to shine
  • 4:00 - 4:03
will contribute to feed hopes of sustainable developpement
  • 4:03 - 4:06
We will use technologies tested elsewhere.
  • 4:06 - 4:10
Our technical contribution is to adapt them to a colder climate
  • 4:10 - 4:13
In the 3D sketch shown here, we can see the different systems coming together.
  • 4:13 - 4:18
Most imposing of all is without a doubt massive use of passive solar energy
  • 4:18 - 4:22
to capture and store the sun’s raw heat.
  • 4:22 - 4:28
South oriented windows lets most of the energy needed to heat the place in
  • 4:28 - 4:32
Aquaponic bassins, in the greenhouse, act as a thermal battery that
  • 4:32 - 4:37
regulates the temperature around the clock and helps avoid overheating in the summer
  • 4:37 - 4:41
The bassins, integrated to the foundation, are the key of this innovative greenhouse
  • 4:41 - 4:44
which will extract it's heat from the soil and the sun
  • 4:44 - 4:47
to tend towards a plant growing environment, year around
  • 4:47 - 4:50
By promoting an integrated food production and short circuit distribution
  • 4:50 - 4:54
we open food production possibilities like the production of winter greens
  • 4:54 - 4:58
a great improvement in the local food supply in northern climate
  • 4:58 - 5:03
Whether it'll be aquaponics, vertical gardening, growing mushrooms or sprouts,
  • 5:03 - 5:06
different levels of innovation go hand in hand.
  • 5:06 - 5:10
We aim for efficiency, multi-purpose of the building, simple technology
  • 5:10 - 5:14
We also make durable, understandable choices that can be duplicated.
  • 5:16 - 5:19
Our project is part of a collective emancipation approach
  • 5:19 - 5:23
Transition is not a personal or individual question, we'll only make it together
  • 5:23 - 5:26
We think it's important to free the knowledge
  • 5:26 - 5:28
We build a prototype in order to share it
  • 5:28 - 5:31
We surround ourselves with allies to document our challenges,
  • 5:31 - 5:32
    our successes, our experiences
  • 5:32 - 5:37
We project to eventually offer an active training and support program
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    for similar emerging projects
  • 5:39 - 5:43
Far from pretending that our project is sufficient to change the course of things
  • 5:43 - 5:47
we are convinced it is part of the necessary paths to explore
  • 5:47 - 5:50
we need prototypes of collective resilience centers
  • 5:50 - 5:54
Together, let us generate new starting points to create an exceptional future
  • 5:57 - 6:02
As a first goal and cornerstone, Le Germoir wishes to build its processing kitchen
  • 6:02 - 6:06
a basic infrastructure to launch small scale economic projects.
  • 6:06 - 6:10
Gathering and growing mushrooms, harvesting and preserving wild edible plants,
  • 6:10 - 6:16
lacto fermentation production, growing sprouts and collective cooking activities
  • 6:16 - 6:19
And above all:  with this kitchen, Le Germoir will be free to move forward,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
grow and share the fruit of its labor.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
Right now, we ask you to help finance this prototype
  • 6:24 - 6:30
For each step there are inevitable costs, but also tremendous savings
  • 6:30 - 6:32
due to the voluntary work being done,
  • 6:32 - 6:34
the various skills brought by the allies from our network
  • 6:34 - 6:36
and the use of salvaged building materials
  • 6:38 - 6:43
Renovations to complete the kitchen will be done with similar savings.
  • 6:43 - 6:47
We estimate that it would normally cost 57000-60000$ for this phase of the project
  • 6:47 - 6:49
if we would give the job to a contactor
  • 6:49 - 6:52
but actual costs will still be of 30 000$.
  • 6:52 - 6:57
In this crowdfunding campaign we are hoping to gather half of the total necessary amount
  • 6:57 - 6:58
    to finish the installations.
  • 6:59 - 7:00
    Thanks for spreading the word
