WEBVTT 00:00:04.491 --> 00:00:07.591 Hi! My name is Sean, and I work for IDEO.org. 00:00:07.591 --> 00:00:09.591 I'm here today to tell you about an exciting 00:00:09.591 --> 00:00:11.825 human-centred design workshop that we created 00:00:11.825 --> 00:00:15.692 with Acumen. Human Centred Design starts with people, 00:00:15.692 --> 00:00:18.123 and we place people at the centre of each stage 00:00:18.123 --> 00:00:22.867 of the design process. HCD is about getting out there, prototyping rapidly 00:00:22.927 --> 00:00:30.024 and iterating until we get our ideas right. This workshop, just like the HCD process, 00:00:30.024 --> 00:00:34.091 begins with discovery. As part of this course, you'll learn 00:00:34.091 --> 00:00:37.558 interviewing skills and other design methods to give you the 00:00:37.558 --> 00:00:41.123 confidence to get out there and start the HCD process 00:00:41.123 --> 00:00:44.458 yourself. Let's hear from one of our designers: 00:00:44.458 --> 00:00:47.992 I was on an ideo.org project last year in Mexico, and 00:00:47.992 --> 00:00:52.157 we were focused on helping low-income people save 00:00:52.157 --> 00:00:54.657 more easily. One of the things we went into the 00:00:54.657 --> 00:00:57.858 field thinking was that people never had bank accounts 00:00:57.858 --> 00:01:00.257 but we found that many had had bank accounts but 00:01:00.257 --> 00:01:03.391 gave them up due to bad experiences and instead 00:01:03.391 --> 00:01:06.292 had developed all sorts of innovative ways to save 00:01:06.292 --> 00:01:09.424 in their communities, families, between friends. So what we 00:01:09.424 --> 00:01:12.858 ended up doing was shifting the focus of the project 00:01:12.858 --> 00:01:16.224 to help them save better with existing means and methods 00:01:16.224 --> 00:01:17.992 they had created. We would never had 00:01:17.992 --> 00:01:20.290 made the support breakthrough if we hadn't got 00:01:20.290 --> 00:01:21.856 out there and talked to people at the very start 00:01:21.856 --> 00:01:23.691 of the project. 00:01:23.691 --> 00:01:26.025 Thanks Adam! The next stage in the process is called 00:01:26.025 --> 00:01:28.491 Ideate. You and your design team will analyse what 00:01:28.491 --> 00:01:31.225 you learned, and begin brainstorming new ideas. This 00:01:31.225 --> 00:01:35.425 part of HCD involves lots of post-it notes. 00:01:35.425 --> 00:01:39.558 "First, to capture everything you've heard out in the field, 00:01:39.558 --> 00:01:42.357 and organise them into themes. 00:01:42.357 --> 00:01:46.624 From there, you start to brainstorm and generate ideas 00:01:46.624 --> 00:01:53.057 really quickly, and for that being visual is key. 00:01:53.057 --> 00:01:56.157 The last stage in the course is Prototyping. 00:01:56.157 --> 00:01:58.858 You'll gain the skills to build and test your ideas with real 00:01:58.858 --> 00:02:01.591 people. Most importantly, you'll learn to iterate 00:02:01.591 --> 00:02:05.625 and evolve your ideas until you get them right. 00:02:05.625 --> 00:02:07.290 Let's hear from the shop. 00:02:07.290 --> 00:02:09.292 "When we wanted to test a new model for selling 00:02:09.292 --> 00:02:11.923 low-cost, clean water in Kenya, we couldn't spend 00:02:11.923 --> 00:02:15.125 a lot of time thinking about what it would look like. 00:02:15.125 --> 00:02:18.023 Instead we went out, got some uniforms. We also 00:02:18.023 --> 00:02:22.292 made some posters, got a kiosk, and sold some items! 00:02:22.292 --> 00:02:25.592 The key was getting feedback from real people about 00:02:25.592 --> 00:02:28.685 whether or not they'd buy the product. 00:02:28.685 --> 00:02:31.292 Want some water? 00:02:31.292 --> 00:02:33.657 We created this course to give you the skills 00:02:33.657 --> 00:02:36.524 and confidence you'll need to begin designing 00:02:36.524 --> 99:59:59.999 solutions yourself.
